Finding Comfort in God’s Presence: Understanding Angels, Faith, and the Unseen

Cloudy sky with sun rays breaking through; title reads 'Understanding Angels, Faith, and the Unseen'.

In seasons of suffering, whether walking through illness, caregiving, or grief, it’s natural to ask difficult questions:

Where is God? Is He near? Does He see what I’m going through?

In this episode of the Believe Big podcast, Ivelisse Page sits down with retired pastor Joe Duke to explore a topic that often feels mysterious, yet deeply comforting: the role of angels and the unseen ways God cares for us.

What unfolds is not just a theological discussion, but a reminder of God’s nearness, His character, and His love, even when we don’t fully understand what He’s doing.

What Are Angels, and What Are They Not?

One of the first clarifications Joe shares is that angels are often misunderstood.

Angels are not people who have passed away. Instead, they are spiritual beings created by God, sent to serve and minister according to His will.

Scripture describes them as messengers and helpers, part of God’s design to care for His people. At the same time, the Bible also makes clear that not all angels are good; some have fallen and oppose God’s purposes.

This spiritual reality may feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable, but it points to something important: there is more happening around us than what we can see.

God’s Comfort Often Comes in Unseen Ways

Throughout the conversation, one theme stands out clearly, God is a God of comfort.

Sometimes that comfort comes through people, through Scripture, or through prayer. Other times, it may come in ways we can’t fully explain.

Joe reflects on how Scripture reminds us that we may encounter angels without even realizing it.

For those walking through difficult circumstances, this truth can be deeply reassuring. Even when we feel alone, we are not without help.

A Personal Story of Encouragement

Ivelisse shares a powerful moment following her first cancer surgery. In the middle of the night, she experienced what felt like a visit from her father, who had passed away. He took her hand and told her she would be okay.

Whether that moment was a dream, a vision, or something more, the impact was undeniable, it brought peace and comfort during a time of fear and uncertainty.

Joe shares a similar experience from his own life. During a particularly difficult season while planting a church, he sensed a powerful presence, what he described as a massive wing passing through the ceiling above him. The moment was brief but vivid, leaving him with a deep sense of reassurance:

God saw him. God was with him. He had not been abandoned.

These stories are not meant to sensationalize, but to remind us that God is capable of meeting us in deeply personal and unexpected ways.

“Fear Not”: The Mark of God’s Presence

One important distinction Joe emphasizes is the absence of fear.

In Scripture, when angels appear, their message often begins the same way: “Do not be afraid.”

God’s presence brings peace, not confusion or dread. While the experience itself may be extraordinary, the outcome is always reassurance.

This becomes an important lens for discernment. Anything that contradicts God’s character or His Word is not from Him.

For Those Who Feel Alone in Their Suffering

For caregivers, patients, and anyone carrying a heavy burden, this conversation offers a gentle but powerful reminder:

God has not forgotten you.

Even when prayers feel unanswered or distant, He is still present. Joe encourages listeners to be honest with God, to bring their questions, frustrations, and fears directly to Him.

There is no need to pretend or use perfect words. God already knows our hearts.

And in ways we may or may not see, He is still caring for us.

The Invitation to Seek God

For those who may be new to faith or unsure what they believe, Joe offers a simple place to begin:

Start with an honest prayer.

“God, I don’t know who You are, but if You’re real, would You show me?”

He also encourages opening the Bible, particularly the Gospels, and reading with an open heart.

Faith does not require having everything figured out. It begins with a willingness to seek.

A Final Word of Hope

At its core, this conversation is not just about angels, it’s about the heart of God.

A God who is present.
A God who comforts.
A God who sees you, even when you feel unseen.

Whether through His Spirit, His Word, or the unseen ways He moves around us, He is always working.

And even in your hardest moments, you are never alone.
